Oliver Fisher: making the step from amateur to professional golf

• The biggest difference is the standard. Professionals are consistently shooting low scores over four rounds – before considering turning pro you need to be able to shoot consistent numbers

• You need to be able to adapt your game to play in different conditions. Develop a game that allows you to play all the shoots. You need to understand your game!

• Professionals tend to work harder – you can’t afford to take it easy or not work on your game. You need to work harder than everybody else and seek the best advice possible

• You need to be mentally strong and have the self belief that you belong with the professionals and you are good enough to win. Without this you will struggle

• The physical side of the game is massive. Courses are getting longer so you need to be strong enough to deal with the courses and be accurate

• The season is a lot longer – you have to be fitter to deal with increased demands that this places on your game. I don’t stop training all year round although I do structure my programme to be more intense during the off-season

• A good caddy is important. It’s vital to be able to relate to them; you need the camaraderie. You need to be able to feel relaxed on the course with him/her. Communication is vital, the caddy is part of your team so he/she has to know when and when not to say things

• Corporate golf and pro-am’s are important. You need to be able to make your playing partners feel relaxed; they’re usually not used to playing with professionals. You need to show them you are having fun, communicate with them and show you are trying hard

• You need to approach talking to the media in a positive way. You need to answer questions in a positive fashion

• You need to create a close team around you. Without the support network you won’t be able to perform to the best of your ability
