Robertshawe and Colegate lead birdie barrage at Walton Heath

May 10, 2010: Sam Robertshawe and Jack Colegate (pictured) were the two outstanding performers at the Faldo Series UK Championship staged over the majestic Old Course at Walton Heath.

Robertshawe, a former South of England Boys’ champion from the Army Golf Club in Aldershot, produced rounds of 67 and 71 to win the Boys’ Under-21 event with a six under par 36-hole aggregate of 138 while Colegate, from Rochester Cobham, replicated that performance, producing rounds of 72 and 66 to win the Under-18 event by two shots.

Colegate was presented with the trophy by virtue of a lower final round.  However both Colegate and Robertshawe earn places in the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final, to be staged at the Lough Erne Resort, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, this September where they will be joined by the other age group winners at Walton Heath: Benjamin David (Boys’ Under-16), Dana Greenslade (Girls’ Under-21) and Dulcie Sverdloff (Girls’ Under-16).

This year’s Faldo Series Europe has already produced some excellent scoring and it was no different at Walton Heath where no less than twelve competitors broke par and another four matched that figure.

Robertshawe held a two shot lead over Gavin Samuels (Leighton Buzzard) after his spectacular opening 67. He dropped two strokes to par over the first three holes of his second round but recovered to post three birdies and finish two shots clear of Samuels and Rudy Hercik (Gaudet Luce). Joshua White (Chipstead) claimed fourth place in the Under-21 event with rounds of 73 and 71 for a one under par total of 143.

Colegate was tied eighth after the first round of the Under-18 event but then spread-eagled the field with a sensational six under par 66 that included five birdies and an eagle on the 494-yard par-5 8th hole. His only dropped shot of the day came on the 404-yard par-4 18th but that still left him two shots ahead of Moor Park’s Callum Shinkwin and five in front of Brandon Thompson (Freshwater Bay), Craig Cameron (Wentworth), Ross Dickson (Crews Hill), Max McGrail (Pinner Hill) and Walton Heath member, Ben Taylor, who also produced some fireworks of his own by carding a fine second round 67.

Benjamin David from the Colchester Golf Club in Essex produced two rounds of the highest quality to win the Boy’s Under-16 event and book his trip to the 2010 Faldo Series Europe Grand Final at Lough Erne.

David went into the second round trailing first round leader Luke Fitzpatrick (Stoke Park) by four shots after an opening 73 but Fitzpatrick fell away with a closing 78 leaving David to add a two under par 70 to his opening 73 and finish a single shot ahead of James Allan (Chelmsford) on one under par 143.

Dana Greenslade, the Wentworth Ladies’ Club champion and also the current holder of the Worcestershire Ladies’ County Championship, won the Girls’ Under-21 event with a fine two over par aggregate of 150 and will also be joining all the other age-group winners for the Grand Final in Northern Ireland this September.

Greenslade opened with a one under par 73 and then carded a three over par 77 to finish one shot in front of Hayling Island’s Raffi Dyer who posted rounds of 74 and 77. Daisy-May Kenny from Cuddington Golf Club was third a further two shots behind after rounds of 74 and 79.

The prize for the leading Under-16 girl went to Thorpe Hall’s Dulcie Sverdloff who added a 77 to her opening 74 to finish four strokes ahead of Ashleigh Greenham (West Essex). Jerri Sewell from Pedham Place was third in the Under-16 girls’ event on 160.
