Nick Faldo receives knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II
10 November 2009: Nick Faldo was at Windsor Castle today to receive his knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.
Accompanied by his family, Nick became the first professional golfer to receive a knighthood for services to the sport since Sir Henry Cotton.
After more than 30 years of playing golf at the very highest level, Nick was honoured in recognition of a career in which he has gone on to be recognised as Britain’s most successful golfer.
With six Majors and a record-breaking Ryder Cup career, as well as a total of 92 weeks as the world’s number one golfer, Nick has more recently turned his attention to nurturing the next generation of players through the Faldo Series as well as creating a legacy of world-class golf course designs throughout the world.
Faldo commented after the ceremony: “It has been such an emotional day and I am both humbled and honoured to have had my achievements recognised in this way. I feel very grateful to have been able to share the experience with my parents and my children. I intend to continue to create opportunities through the sport not only here in the UK but across the globe and I am immensely proud to be flying the flag for British golf.”
